Discipleship

Matthew’s Gospel ends with Jesus issuing a charge to His disciples. His parting words to them were, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

Jesus’ closest followers would go on to change the world by making disciples and teaching them to observe all that Jesus commanded. It didn’t end with those closest to Jesus because, by nature, disciples make disciples. We are disciples of Jesus because someone discipled us who had been discipled by someone else who had been discipled by someone else. You are a disciple of Jesus, in part, because of decades and centuries of other disciples’ obedience to Jesus.

As an effort to obey Jesus’ command and to highlight the importance of disciple-making, we, for the last few years, have devoted time at the beginning of the year to emphasizing the necessity of making disciples. We want to help you, as a disciple, make disciples. What does that look like? Very simply, we want to help you, as a disciple, help others to follow Jesus.

If we’re honest, we don’t think much about our spiritual growth. Most of us probably check our weight more often than we assess our spiritual growth! But Hebrews 5:11-13 makes it clear that we should be paying attention to our spiritual development. We should be growing up spiritually!

So will you commit right now to listen to or watch all four messages in this series? Will you work through the questions and pursue spiritual growth in your own life?
