Sermon: “Signs of Life Introduction"

Series:  “Signs of Life”

Text:  John 20:30-31

Small Group Discussion Questions for Feb 24 Sermon

Icebreaker: Have everyone in the group check their pulse (count the number of beats in 10 seconds and multiply by six).  See who has the lowest resting heart rate.  Ask if anyone has a story about a time their heart stopped or their pulse dropped dangerously low.

Discussion:

Opening discussion –

  1. Does believing in Jesus save a person or not?  Why or why not?
  2. Read John 20:30-31. This is John’s purpose statement for his Gospel.  Why does he call Jesus’ miracles “signs”?  What did those signs point to?  As you talk about the purpose of Jesus’ miracles, also discuss what his purpose was NOT.
  3. Read John 1:10-12. In this passage, John describes the different ways that people responded to Christ and these “signs.”  Ask the group to think of some examples of people in the Gospels who heard Jesus and saw the miracles but did not believe.  Why do you think those people didn’t believe?  Why do some not believe today?
  4. Read John 1:47-50. Did Nathanael believe in Jesus?  Then why did he need to see “greater things”?  Ask the group to talk about how the faith of the disciples developed during their time with Jesus.  What caused their belief to grow?  What causes your faith to grow?
  5. Read John 20:30-31 again. Is John referring to eternal “life” in heaven or to our life here on earth?  How does belief lead to life?  What does it look like when we “believe” but don’t fully live like we believe?  How is that “standing on the chair” without “falling into His arms”?
  6. If you have time, ask one or two group members to share their testimony of how God brought them to believe in Jesus, including the steps of belief along the way.

Action Steps:

  1. If you’ve never done it before, write out your own personal faith statement – what you believe about Jesus!
  2. Take some time this week to pray specifically that God would grow your faith over the course of this sermon series.
