Small Group Discussion Questions for April 14 Sermon

“The Sign of Sight”
Series:  “Signs of Life”
Text:  John 9:1-41

Icebreaker: Ask group members if anyone has ever had diminished sight issues and have them describe what it was like.  Or perhaps someone in the group knows someone who is blind and can give the group a sense of what it’s like.

Discussion:

  1. Read Isaiah 42:1-7 and John 8:12. Talk about how beautifully Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy about the Messiah.
  2. Read John 9:1-5.  Jesus cares about the problems of the hurting. Why did the disciples assume that this man’s blindness was the result of someone’s sin?  What was God’s true purpose in this situation?  In verse 4, Jesus says, “We must do the works of him who sent me.”  He included his followers.  So what are these “works” that we are supposed to be doing?
  3. Read John 9:6-12.  Jesus encourages the faith of the obedient. Why would Jesus make mud and send this man to wash in a pool, rather than just touching his eyes and restoring his sight?  What might have been the lesson for the disciples?  What does this teach us about our involvement in “spit and dirt” ministry?
  4. Read John 9:13-34. This sidebar shows us how the religious leaders reacted to Jesus’ ministry and to this man who was healed.  In what ways do you see this man’s faith growing as the persecution increases?  How does our faith grow in the midst of persecution?
  5. Read John 9:35-41.  Jesus opens the eyes of the blind. How do we know that Jesus was interested in more than just this man’s physical healing?  What does Jesus mean by his statements in verses 39-41?  What does spiritual blindness look like in our lives?  How do we have our eyes opened?
  6. As a group, sing a few verses of “Amazing Grace” and take some time to thank Jesus for opening your eyes to the Truth.

Action Steps:

  1. If you are experiencing any kind of pain or suffering right now, know that Jesus isn’t standing back condemning your sin, He cares for you.  Ask him to touch you with His “spit and dirt” and to heal you.
  2. Is there a step of obedience you need to take today?  Do you need to go to the Pool of Siloam?  If so, take that step!  Don’t hesitate anymore!
  3. Pray specifically this week that Jesus would show you any blind spots you have.  Then ask him for spiritual sight!  Tell him you want to believe in him even more than you already do!
