Small Group Discussion Questions for March 24 Sermon

“The Sign at the Pool”
Series:  “Signs of Life”
Text:  John 5:1-15

Icebreaker: Ask group members if they’ve ever been to thermal springs or mineral springs that supposedly had “healing” properties in the water.  What was it like?  What were your expectations?  What were the expectations of others?

Discussion:

  1. Read John 5:1-15. Ask the group to note the contrasts between this miracle and the one we studied last week in John 4:43-54.  Why do you think this miracle is so different?
  2. Jesus has the divine sovereignty to choose us (v.1-5). Why do you think Jesus chooses this man out of all the needy people at the pool?  How does that choice reveal Jesus’ divine sovereignty?  What does this characteristic of Jesus mean for us?
  3. Jesus has the divine power to heal us (v.6-9a). Jesus asks a surprising question, “Do you want to get well?”  Why did he ask this?  According to this man, what had prevented his healing?  In what ways do we often turn to the same excuses for our problems and how does that prevent us from getting “well”?Jesus has the divine authority to free us (v.9b-13). Why would Jesus knowingly violate the Sabbath regulations of the religious leaders?  Read v.16-18. Why did Jesus’ words and actions so infuriate the religious leaders?  Give some examples of ways we need to trust Christ’s authority in our lives.
  4. Jesus has the divine grace to confront us (v.14-15). Why did Jesus go looking for this man?  How did the man respond to Jesus’ warning?  What do we learn about how we should respond when God points out sin in our lives?
  5. As a group, affirm your desire to let Jesus make you “well.”  Perhaps even make a commitment to speak into each other’s lives in ways that will promote spiritual wellness.

Action Steps:

  1. Begin each day this week by thanking God that He has chosen you and saved you!
  2. Focus on one illness or weakness in your life and pray diligently for God’s healing.
  3. Listen carefully.  If God is pointing out some sin in your life, confess that sin and receive His freeing forgiveness!
